THE VERB "TO BE"

The verb "to be" translates as "ser o estar". When we use this verb, it is because we want to refer to the characteristics of a person or something. We can also use it with a noun, a place and an adjective.

She      is          Ella es/está                  She is not       (Ella no es/está)             Is she?         ¿Es ella?

It          is          Esto es/está                  It   is not         (Esto no es/está)             Is it?            ¿Es esto?

Examples

She is tall.               Ella es alta.

Are you busy?       ¿Estas ocupado/a?

Am I sad?              ¿Estoy triste?

The flowerpot is old. It is a relic.   La maceta es antigua. Esta es una reliquia.

He is ill.                                               El está enfermo.

They are from Canada.                   Ellos son de Canadá.

I am a teacher.                                  Yo soy una profesor/a

The cat is playing with a woll ball. It is playful.  El gato esta jugando con un ovillo. Este es juguetón.
